PDM’s Statement on the Collapse of the Assad Regime

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate

O’ Syria, your joy is our joy. As the Palestinians living in the diaspora, witnessing your freedom from the oppressive rule of Bashar Al-Assad’s tyrannical regime felt like a part of our beloved homeland was free. For over five decades, the Assad family’s rule brought immense suffering to the Syrian people. Through massacres, forced displacements, mass kidnappings, fabricated death certificates, and systematic oppression, this regime sought to crush the will of one of the most resilient and honorable peoples in the world.

This regime, despite its rhetorical claims of resistance, was never an ally of the oppressed. Acts of betrayal against the Palestinian cause and complicity with imperial and Zionist forces stain the Assad regime’s rule. In 1976, the Assad regime played a pivotal role in the Tel Al-Zaatar massacre, where over 3,000 Palestinian refugees were brutally slaughtered in their camp in Lebanon in collaboration with the Zionist settler colony and Phalangist militias. For decades, Assad imprisoned, tortured, and murdered Palestinian resistance fighters, including members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), while claiming to support Palestinian liberation.

At the height of the imperialist siege of Syria, Assad cut off aid to the Palestinian refugees in Yarmouk camp, starving thousands and reducing one of the most vibrant Palestinian communities to ruin. The Assad regime’s decades-long surrender of the Syrian Golan Heights to Zionist occupation also underlines its treachery, prioritizing its hold on power over Syria’s sovereignty and the liberation of its lands.

The collapse of Bashar Al-Assad’s regime does not mean the end of imperialist aggression against Syria. At the time of this statement, the Zionist entity has launched over 310 airstrikes on Syrian territory and conducted a 10-kilometer ground incursion. These attacks aim not to defend Syrian sovereignty but to suppress any potential for real change within Syria. No true sovereignty opens its borders to foreign armies and militias, as Assad did, allowing forces of imperialism to carve up the nation. The Zionist entity is not fearful of Assad’s regime, which allowed the Golan Heights to remain occupied—it fears a free Syrian people liberated from their oppressor.

The road ahead for Syria remains uncertain, but this moment is a testament to the strength of the Syrian people. Their liberation is intertwined with the liberation of all oppressed peoples, including Palestinians. The Assad regime’s betrayal of the Palestinian cause will not define the future of a free Syria. Instead, a genuinely independent Syria will partner in the broader struggle for justice and liberation, from Damascus to Gaza, from Yarmouk to Al-Quds.

The fall of Assad’s rule is a reminder that no tyrant endures forever. Our struggle is not only against injustice from the West but also rooting out injustice anywhere it may be. Unity among the oppressed is the surest path to freedom, and Allah is the only one who grants victory. Today, as we witness this turning point in Syria, we reaffirm our commitment to liberating all our lands and peoples. True liberation cannot exist in isolation—it demands the dismantling of all systems of colonialism, oppression, and imperialism that afflict our Ummah.

We ask Allah to grant the Syrian people righteous leadership, lasting peace, and a future free from tyranny and foreign domination. May their steadfastness inspire all oppressed peoples to continue striving for their liberation.

From Al-Sham to Al-Quds, we are one people united in our struggles and our hope for a world built on justice and dignity. Together, we stand as one Ummah. Your victory is ours, and your freedom is intertwined with the freedom of Palestine. May every tyrant fall, and may justice prevail for all our people.

Ameen.
